Colours: White but I'm spinning Grey.. Not sure on the history of grey Cheviot sheep.
Feel in hand: Its chalky but a nice soft feel.
Fibre prep: Split the fibre and probably short forward draft.
Smell: Clean and non sheepy.
Fibre uses: Anything next to skin, scarves, socks, sweaters etc.
Historical Facts: From the border areas between England and Scotland. Found in the Cheviot hills in the UK. They think a Spanish ship sank near English coast in the 14th century and this is how they were introduced to the area.
Next to skin feel: Soft feels very nice no itch.
Fibre Lustor: Lacks any brilliance but its very pretty colour.
Staple length: 4" to 5" inch
Microns: 24 to 33
Cheviot Grey spun yarn details:
Spun on my Kromski Sonata - using the whorl size 10 to 1
I plyed from center pull ball
Aran (7 to 8 WPI)
21.6 meters
Floofed up a lot when spun really soft spongey feel to it. The colour is gorgeous
Plying shows a definite pretty twist in the plyed yarn
If I hold it near my face and neck I feel the slightest prickle feel but its not annoying or itchy.
Would I buy this fibre again.. Yes, its probably one of my favourite yarns so far that Ive spun.
Would I knit with it.. Yes but I wouldn't use it for baby knits or for any items like a scarf that touches my neck but people with less sensitive neck skin may like it. I love the way it feels soft in my hand so Id definitely make beanies or you could use it in socks, shawls etc. Not too many guard or kemp hairs in it.
